My drivers license expires on January 2nd but I'm needing to wait a week after my birthday so I can get my new address legally put on it. (It was either pay the current price of $32 and then $10 later to update my address or wait and not pay any extra but have my license expire)

Does NC have a grace period?

Edit: I just went on and renewed it today. Since we are buying the house from a relative I don't see the harm in changing it since it'll be ours next week.

Your Driver License should be valid until the end date of your I-20 + 60 days or DS-2019 + 30 days, as DPS is currently considering the “grace period” as part of the Driver License validity. Please note that this does not seem to be the case when the student is on OPT, but the Driver License is issued until the end date of the OPT only. If you are between the ages of 18 and 84, your Texas license is good for six years. But once you hit the age of 85, you have to start renewing your license every two years. When to Renew Your License. You can renew your Texas driver license up to a year before it expires and up to two years after it expires. Some states will give a grace period of 5–30 days, but yes, get thyself to the DMV ASAP, to avoid being ticketed for driving on an expired license. Unfortunately, most states do not give a grace period; in addition you shoul had been notified that your license is up for renewal, either by mail or email, 4–6 weeks before the expiration. If the expiration date is within the next 25 months, active duty military can renew their driver’s license in person before deployment. If the expiration date is more than 25 months away and it falls on a date when you know you will be out of the state, active duty military can request an extension.

  1. If you plan to travel or rent a car during the 60-day grace period, you should renew your driver's license; some entities may not recognize the grace period. You may renew your driver's license 30 days before its expiration date.
  2. For legally driving without renewing the license, the grace period is 0.00 seconds. For renewing your license, you have up to 2 years. After that time, you must start over as if you were applying for a new license.
